Why this petition matters

Started by Joseph Kuri

To all Trinity students and rising juniors in particular. I believe many of us are currently suffering the housing selection process that is in place. As a small number of rising juniors will be living in the luxury of City Vista, many of us will not. Many of us will be subjected to the impractical and small dorm rooms that we will be forced to live in. The difference between City Vista and any residence hall on campus is an EXTREME difference in living quality. The residents of City Vista will enjoy a kitchen, full size refrigerator,  living room, and private bathrooms. While the rest of us will be confined to a mini fridge, no living room, and no ability to cook for ourselves. Now Reslife will tell you that "you can cook in the kitchen down the hall", but they forget that there is nowhere to store an adequate amount of food to make anything besides the most basic of meals.

Now The housing tab on Trinity's website will tell you that 2 of the reasons for requiring students to live on campus for three years are "personal growth" and "Understanding responsibility". Yet the dorm life completely restricts any ability to grow and become more responsible. Living in a dorm requires you to rely on someone cooking for you, cleaning your floors, and making the laundry process so frustrating that many people go elsewhere just to do laundry. Rising juniors need to have the ability to live and provide for themselves if they so choose. As rising juniors, many of us are two short years away from being completely on our own and many of us will not have learned what that is like because of the three year housing policy that restricts our ability to grow as people off campus.

If you are to send reslife an email asking to be off campus for any reason, they will reply that it would be "unfair" because they have turned down other people. What is unfair is that students have been living off campus since as early as their sophomore year. What is unfair is that some students will live in an apartment in City Vista while others are stuck in a dorm room. What is unfair is that students were given permission to leave campus 2 years ago due to the pandemic but now if you have a fear of COVID or have been impacted by COVID you no longer have the ability to get off campus. What is unfair is that students are having to turn down summer opportunities because the housing policy does not allow them to sign a lease of any form in San Antonio. Not to mention that the cost of living on campus is immensely more expensive than living off campus.

The only winner from the three year policy is Trinity. Trinity gains money and students suffer.

The administrators and residential life staff have the ability to make a change. It is time to stop holding students against their will. It is time to let students grow and actually become responsible by giving Juniors the ability to live on their own the same way almost every elite university allows. I hope this petition is not pushed to the side the same way Trinity has pushed the well being of its students to the side.
