Here in the Philippines, not only does plastic help our economy, but it also provides affordable consumer items to low- and middle-income families. However, a heavy reliance on single-use plastics such as multilayer sachets and pouches has transformed the Philippines into a "sachet economy" that exacerbates the region's worrying levels of marine plastic pollution.

The Philippines, like many fast-developing nations, struggles with unsustainable plastic production/consumption and inadequate solid waste management infrastructure. Recognizing the critical need to address the expansion of the plastics sector and the mismanagement of plastic waste, the Philippines is building and transitioning toward a circular economy. This study used a plastic value chain methodology to assess the Philippines' plastics recycling business and its contribution to the circular economy. It highlights significant obstacles, market drivers, and opportunities for expanding recycling activities through targeted governmental and private sector actions.

In addition to having an unsightly presence in the environment, plastics pose grave threats to wildlife. Studies have shown that marine species consume and become entangled in various plastic wastes found in the water. It also aggravates flooding in our country due to blocked canals and inappropriate garbage disposal in rivers. That is why we need to end the production of single-use plastics.
