End the Enslavement of African Migrants and Refugees

Slavery is the next thing to hell.

 - Harriet Tubman

On November 14, 2017 CNN released the results of an investigation in Libya, revealing that Black migrants and refugees are currently being held in detention centres, rounded up to be displayed at auctions — and sold. Their worth amounting to no more than a few hundred dollars.

In exchange, they are used against their will for physical labour. They are demeaned. They are raped and exploited.

This is not only disturbing and painful news, it is beyond a stark reminder of how far we have yet to go when it comes to abolishing slavery. When it comes to hearing the voices of those who are currently being silenced and ignored in Libya.

Put simply: the selling of Black women, children and men — of their lives and dreams — is unacceptable.

We can change this.

We can send a message that the eyes of the world are on Libya. That we are calling for, expecting and demanding the sale of children, men and women to come to an end. Immediately.

Thank you a thousand times in advance for signing this petition; for being a solution and taking a stand against this injustice — "the next thing to hell."

And thank you for standing with Black migrants and refugees, trapped in Libya, in their call to be free.

To the Decision Makers:

Slavery is the next thing to hell.

So we are counting on you, our world leaders, to take action, to uphold human rights and:

Continue condemning the slavery taking place through human traffickers in Libya, so this slave trade — this crime against the human body, mind, and spirit — is brought to an end by your actions. Immediately.

Bring justice to Black refugees and migrants kidnapped by human traffickers: who, in turn, torture, rape, and demand ransoms from Black migrants and refugees in exchange for their lives. Immediately.

Close the illegal detention centres, which lead to the torture, abuse, and disappearance of refugees and migrants from many nations, from young to old, who are stuck in Libya; these illegal detention centres, which lead to the infinite abuses of refugees and migrants must be abolished. Immediately.

Bring justice to us all by condemning the said human traffickers for their crimes against humanity. Condemn them in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states in Article 8: “No one shall be held in slavery; slavery and the slave-trade in all their forms shall be prohibited.”

Collectively, we can end this. We can work together so that never again will there be any repetition of what Harriet Tubman once called “the next thing to hell.”

Let us make sure that slavery has no place in our societies in the future — and at this crucial moment.
