End the Censorship of Private Online Communities: Protect Freedom of Expression on Social
The Issue
To: The United States Congress, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the
Department of Justice (DOJ)
We, the undersigned, call for immediate action to stop the overreach and censorship of private,
non-violent Facebook groups and other social media communities.
In recent years, social media platforms like Facebook (operated by Meta) have increasingly
censored private groups discussing alternative health topics, peptides, therapies, and other personal
issues under vague and overreaching policies such as "prescription drug violations." This
censorship often results in the outright deletion of groups that have existed for over a decade,
destroying entire communities of friends and support networks.
These groups are not advocating for violence or engaging in harmful activities.
They are private
spaces where individuals gather to exchange ideas, support each other, and share personal
experiences-particularly around health and wellness. This growing pattern of censorship violates the
fundamental right to free expression and private assembly enshrined in the First Amendment of the
U.S. Constitution.
Key Issues:
1. Violation of Private Speech: Social media platforms, acting as de facto public forums, are
restricting the ability of users to communicate privately about legal topics. This undermines the
principles of free speech and assembly.
2. Discrimination Against Alternative Health Communities: Facebook's sweeping policies
disproportionately target groups discussing alternative therapies, health solutions, and personal
experiences. This bias aligns with the financial interests of pharmaceutical companies, which benefit
from suppressing conversations about non-pharmaceutical treatments.
3. Destruction of Longstanding Communities: Many groups have existed for years, fostering
meaningful friendships and support networks. Their sudden deletion is harmful to mental health and
community building.
4. Big Pharma Influence on Social Media: Evidence suggests that censorship on Facebook and
other platforms is being driven by pressure from pharmaceutical companies. This constitutes
corporate overreach into the realm of private discourse.
What We Demand:- Congressional Oversight of Social Media Policies: We call on Congress to investigate Meta's
(Facebook's) policies that lead to the censorship and deletion of private groups, particularly those
related to alternative health discussions.- Stronger Protections for Free Speech in the Digital Space: Pass legislation that limits the ability of
social media companies to censor lawful speech and assembly in private groups.- Transparency from Social Media Companies: Require platforms like Facebook to publicly disclose
the criteria they use to censor or delete groups and content.- Support from Politicians Opposing Censorship: We urge politicians like Senator Josh Hawley,
Senator Rand Paul, and others who have spoken out against social media overreach to champion
this cause and protect Americans' rights to free expression and private assembly.
Why This Matters:
When private citizens can no longer gather online to discuss personal health choices or share
experiences, it sets a dangerous precedent for censorship in all aspects of society.
The ability to
speak freely and assemble, even in digital spaces, is a cornerstone of democracy.
If left unchecked,
this overreach will erode trust in social media and further divide our nation.
We call on the United States government to intervene and ensure that these platforms cannot
suppress free expression and private communities for profit or ideological alignment.
