End Sexual Harassment of Female Farm Workers

End Sexual Harassment of Female Farm Workers
Why this petition matters
Female farmworkers in the United States experience high levels of sexual assault in their workplace, but many of these assaults go unreported. In fact, the Southern Poverty Law Center found that 80% of farmworker women report that they have experienced sexual harassment on the job as of 2010. These women are afraid to speak out against their assaulters and rapists because most of the time, these men are figures of authority in the workplace. These men are usually their supervisors, bosses, managers, etc. While their assaulter's power of authority is a strong force creating fear in these women, the farmworkers also face the threat of deportation as many of them are undocumented. Many factors are propelled against these women, further deterring them from speaking out. Therefore, as a united front, we need to be the voice for these scared and vulnerable women who are experiencing many horrible acts of violence and are not being heard or compensated. These women already face harsh working conditions with little pay, which is why allowing these authoritative men take advantage of their position in power is unacceptable. Laws and trainings have been implemented to help educate workplaces about the abuse that is taking place, but that is not enough. The assailants of these sexual crimes need to be persecuted and punished for their actions. Therefore, by signing this petition, you are providing a voice to these farmworkers and letting agencies and the government know that we will not be silent until stricter laws have been put in place to prevent these violent crimes and more severe punishments are carried out in the United States.
