End Sexual Assault at Gonzaga University: Hold People Accountable
Sexual assault is not uncommon on college campuses, but that does not mean we should just accept that and move on with our lives. Even if we ourselves are not the victim, we owe it to others to do the right thing and stand up for people who feel like their voices are silenced. Often, the blame is placed on the victim. They are asked things like "what were you wearing?" or "how much did you have to drink?" instead of the blame being focused on the perpetrator. Women are taught ways to try and avoid being sexually assaulted, rather than men being taught not to sexually assault women. At Gonzaga University, the school does not take this issue as seriously as it should. They claim they are against sexual assault, but when it has occurred, they merely send an email saying it happened and include resource links that don't open or that are completely unrelated. Please sign this petition to advocate for increased education and action from the school in regards to sexual assault victims and prevention methods to put an end to this issue. The university needs to take teaching issues like consent more seriously. They should have to teach it in person, rather than the online "course" students have to take over the summer that is easy to skip through. Additionally, the school should provide more resources for people who feel unsafe or people who have been affected, and make them feel like their experiences and voice matter. Furthermore, the punishment for perpetrators of sexual assault should be more severe. They should not be able to get off with a slap on the wrist, but should face the consequences of their actions to the full extent of the law.
