End rampant racism in sentencing, now
This petition had 137 supporters
End Jim Crow prison sentencing for cocaine users, exponentially more African Americans are jailed because of racist police using dragnets to get the arrests they have ready access to, and were hired to, in order to racially oppress minorities; there should be exponentially longer prison sentences for cocaine marketers, sellers, etc., to recttify these ongoing and historical injustices. Powder cocaine users are disproportionately white; users of crack cocaine are disproportionately African American. Currently, first-time conviction for simple possession of five hundred grams of powder cocaine triggers a mandatory, minimum, five-year, prison sentence. Five grams of crack cocaine triggers the same mandatory sentence. This sentencing disparity is decimating black communities and contributing to our overcrowded prison system. S.B.1789/H.R.265, eliminates the mandatory prison sentence for first-time conviction for simple possession of cocaine; please, ask Congress to apply the Fair Sentencing Act retroactively. Please, support this petition to reduce racial bias in our criminal justice system and reserve our overpopulated prisons for violent offenders, now.
