Why this petition matters

Sharks rarely hurt people. When they do, it’s either out of curiosity, self defense, or mistaken identity. It is incredibly rare for a shark to bite twice. They are intelligent animals who have a range of personalities, and can be shy of us.

In Queensland and New South Wales, shark nets are often used to prevent sharks and beach goers from encountering each other. Lethal drumlines, which have baited hooks and are meant to kill targeted shark species, while non-targeted sharks get released, are also used in Queensland, expect for the great barrier reef. These two methods frequently result in death for the shark, and for the shark nets, many other animals get caught and die in them as well. On July 5th, 2022, two humpback whales were discovered caught in the shark nets, though they were freed shortly after.

This petition asks the Queensland government and the New South Wales goverment to end the lethal shark program, and to deploy other methods that are non lethal, such as drone survelliance and educating the public about sharks.
