END NEW JERSEY'S MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCES

END NEW JERSEY'S MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCES

Enough Is Enough!!!
This week (Nov. 12, 2021) marks the ''2'' year anniversary in which the New Jersey Criminal Sentencing & Disposition Commission (CSDC) unanimously approved ''9'' recommendations regarding eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug crimes.
These recommendations which were supported by N.J. Governor Phil Murphy, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, N.J. Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, Chief Justice Deborah Poritz, Head of The Public Defender's Office Joseph E. Krakora, Jiles Ship from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, Rev. Charles F. Boyer the Founder of Salvation & Social Justice, amongst many others; passed both the Senate and Assembly in a 46-20 vote.
The Bill represented significant steps towards addressing the proportionality & racial disparity between Black & White offenders in the N.J prison system, which has the highest disparity of ANY state in the nation. The Bill (S2586/A4369) which was conditionally vetoed by Gov. Murphy due to State Sen. Nick Sacco of North Bergen, who added an amendment to the bill to include ''official misconduct'', which is used to prosecute politicians, police officers, and other public workers.
POLITICO NEW JERSEY REPORTED Walter Somick, the son of Sacco's longtime girlfriend, faced official misconduct charges.
Gov. Murphy stated that ''THESE OFFICIALS TOOK OATHS & SHOULD BE HELD TO HIGHER STANDARDS.''
Following the conditional-veto, N.J Attorney General issued a Directive no. 2021-4, Eliminating Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Nonviolent Drug Crimes. The Attorney General's Directive was assigned to Judge Susan J. Steele to modify all pre-existing sentences for those who are incarcerated. Judge Susan J. Steele... Also happens to be from Bergen County, a county where Sen. Sacco happens to have a great deal of influence, ruled in her order/opinion that she would NOT abide by the AG's Directive and instead denied it on her partial decision.
However, 7 months later to no avail, ''we'', our friends & families continue to be taken on an emotional roller coaster fueled by false hope and caught up in a web of ''politics''.... Politics that have prevented us from being reunited with our loved ones in these times of uncertainty!
''WE'' are petitioning and asking our Gov. Phil Murphy... A Governor who's made many promises... A Governor who we've championed back into office... To now support ''us'' in exercising his executive power to grant clemency with regards to eliminating mandatory minimum sentences to all those effected by it.
