End the Mural Moratorium in Los Angeles

Los Angeles municipal code defines murals as signs and the permitting process constitutes an effective ban on this art.

Art in the public space is necessary for a healthy visual environment, a counter balance to gray walls and endless advertising. Los Angeles was once the ‘Mural Capital of the World’ and this city should claim that title again!

Murals are not signs and art is not a crime! I ask that Mayor Villagaigosa and the L.A. City Attorney's office to end the mural moratorium now.

I believe that the majority of people would enjoy seeing more art and less advertisement in their day-to-day lives. It is no more invasive than advertising, and a whole lot more pleasant! Put it to a vote and I'm sure the majority will support it—especially in So-Cal...or is this not a democracy anymore?

Art is NOT 'signage' any more than ballet is advertising. Does the LA plan to fine homeowners because they paint their homes? These unfortunate decisions spread quickly so it doesn't matter where you live. Silence is tacit agreement!

I love art, it is very beautiful in its own individual way, sometimes expressing itself, sometimes telling a story, but always beautiful. Art should be seen by the world, and not kept hidden.

Art is to be Expressed Freely. A pop-culture picture is a lot better looking then 50 year old brick.
