Long waits to bury loved ones at vets cemetery

Nearly 150 families are waiting to bury their loved ones at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe. The backlog, likely caused by our aging veterans who served in World War II, Vietnam War and the Korean, is causing some families to wait up to two months to bury their loved ones. Please help urge decision makers to address this issue before it gets worse. We must properly honor our veterans and give their families timely closure.
Personal story 1
Our beloved mother passed away on February 19th, 2018. Two days later we reached out to the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery to schedule a date for mom to rest with her husband who served our country in World War II. The earliest date they could schedule her burial service was April 2nd, 2018, nearly a month and a half after she passed. It is unacceptable to the men and women who bravely served our country and their families who are mourning the loss of their love ones to wait this long.
I reached out to the supervisor of the cemetery who said no exceptions could be made, then I reached out to the administrator who was unaware of the backlog.
Ironically, other non veteran cemeteries are able to accommodate burials the same day.
Personal Story 2
My dad died 1/6/18. They wouldn't even MEET with my step mom until the end of January. 17 days to be exact SEVENTEEN DAYS!!! I was horrified. Thankfully they were able to cremate him in time for his memorial service the end of January, but the internment? Not until March 20th. Which means ANOTHER trip home for me. I live on the mainland now. He's a Navy veteran and I was shocked & really, offended. When my mom died at the VA in WA state, also a Navy Veteran, they treated her with respect & there was no massive wait time. How insulting. Yes. I am angry. I understand "island time", but for a situation like this, that is no excuse. Not at all.
This petition is intended to raise awareness in hopes the State of Hawaii will fix this problem and properly honor our Veterans.
