Why this petition matters

Started by John Hadwin

Arizona rewards natural monopolies like Tucson Electric Power & APS for their perpetual & excessive spending habits.  As a result, in 2023, electrical rate increases will outpace Arizona household income increases by more than an order of magnitude.

This will have a devastating effect on Arizona residents, not to mention the financials of Arizona businesses which depend on residents' financial well-being.  In this way, power companies in Arizona are lowering our state's economic trajectory.

Policies should be re-written to ensure that utility companies never again become futility companies.  Rewarding corporate planning that draws inspiration from military spending is the opposite of utility.

Currently, power companies are incentivized to perpetually develop plans to spend a greater fortune than the year before.  This intentional spending exists only to justify tomorrow's rate-increase requests.  Arizona continually approves their futile rate increase requests, which only recoup the cost of what was spent for the sake of the rate increase itself.

Reward utility, not futility.  If futile practices quickly lead to doom rather than reward, our power companies will immediately stop making financially unsustainable choices and do what makes sense for Arizonans.

Petitions for futility companies have been approved for far too long.  Today, the people want their power back.  We petition for the return of utility companies.  It is the petition of the undersigned Arizonans that any rate increase requests that exceed inflation itself be denied.  We respectfully call upon our power companies to each tighten their belts, along with the rest of Arizona, and earn their Utility title.
