You would think that a charity to fight cancer and improve people's well-being would choose as its major national sponsor a company other than one which pollutes our continent with cancer-causing substances and endangers public health.
Yet the Ride to Conquer Cancer's biggest sponsor, Enbridge Inc., has a clear and consistent record of causing damaging oil spills across our continent, and has repeatedly failed to prevent and remedy dangerous spills. Enbridge's hundreds of spills, which have spewed millions of litres of carcinogenic pollutants into our land and water in the last decade, are hazardous to human health, the environment, and the economy (have a look at the News section below for more evidence of Enbridge's record).
Moreover, Enbridge's core business contributes to climate change, which is a direct and significant threat to public health. Enbridge is an integral part of an energy system that causes deadly air pollution and destabilizes the future of our climate.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer is an incredibly worthy charity; in fact with the support of amazing friends and family I've fundraised thousands of dollars for this cause in honour of my father who died after his battle with cancer in 2013. But Enbridge's mission is fundamentally at odds with the purpose and spirit of any cause to fight cancer and improve human health. The Ride to Conquer Cancer can do better. As riders, supporters, and concerned citizens, let's call on The Ride to Conquer Cancer to restore its image and credibility by dropping Enbridge and starting the search for a new National Title Sponsor.
