Encourage President to Use Executive Order to Seize Carbon Assets and place in Public Trust

As of 2011, the debate has been over: we now know how much more carbon gas can be added to the atmosphere and still keep the global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius. (It has already risen 0.8 degrees since there was international agreement on 2 degrees.) That amount of carbon is 565 gigatons. That might sound like a lot, but the world's fossil fuel energy companies currently own 2,795 gigatons of carbon -- 5 times the amount that we are allowed to add to the atmosphere! Not only that, but those companies are financially beholden by futures investments they've traded on, and will extract and release those holdings. Unless we stop them. By signing this petition, we pledge to stand behind, and vote for, and support the candidate who promises to use executive order to seize these assets from our domestic energy companies and place them into a federal trust, and establish a moratorium on further extraction of fossil fuels, while we engage in a national discussion on what to do about this emergency situation.
