Presently, many government candidates and officials are ignorant of the basic knowledge necessary to hold office, serve on committees, and make informed decisions about matters that affect the quality of our education, health, and our economy and standard of living, among other issues. Many are woefully unaware of how our government is structured and how it works, as well as its laws, many involving human rights. Below are just a few examples. During congressional meetings and speeches, the following actually occurred:
* Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas and freshman Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick, missed the swearing in of the 112th Congress because they were busy at a fundraiser. The pair watched the swearing-in on television from the Capitol Visitors Center with their hands raised. Then they cast votes as members, a violation of the constitution. http://www.politico.com/story/2011/01/gop-lawmakers-miss-oath-still-vote-047170
*Rep. Mick Mulvaney, among many others, pushed to default on the U.S. debt and allow our country to suffer a credit rating downgrade. https://www.dpcc.senate.gov/?p=news&id=268
*Gov. Mary Fallon erroneously named the three branches of government as the Supreme Court, the Legislative Branch and the People. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/7/9/1400714/-Oklahoma-governor-in-dire-need-of-a-civics-class http://www.tulsaworldtv.com/Gov-Mary-Fallin-discusses-her-decision-not-to-remove-a-Ten-Commandments-monument-from-the-state-Capitol--29343027
EVOLUTION and CLIMATE CHANGE
*During the questioning of a teacher about evolution and how it was being taught in Louisiana schools, Sen. Walsworth asked when E. Coli bacteria would evolve into a human being. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwJ-6sqKXQU
*At a Liberty Baptist Church Sportsman's Banquet in Hartwell, GA., Rep. Paul Broun proclaimed that evolution is a lie “from the pit of hell” and that Jesus rode on a dinosaur. http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/05/14203607-video-shows-scientist-in-congress-saying-evolution-is-from-pit-of-hell
*Numerous aspiring and elected government officials deny climate change, despite scientists’ climate change data and scientific facts in general. http://grist.org/climate-energy/surprise-a-third-of-congress-members-are-climate-changedeniers/https://www.barackobama.com/climate-change-deniers/#/
WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
*Rep. Mike Moon said, “As a former embryo myself, I would like protection for all embryos,” in regard to putting an abortion ban on the ballot in Missouri.http://bipartisanreport.com/2016/03/30/gop-congressman-claims-to-be-womens-health-expert-because-he-is-a-former-embryo/ http://news.groopspeak.com/anti-abortion-lawmaker-im-a-former-embryo-myself-so-i now-what-im-talking-about-video/
*Rep. Vito Barbieri asked an unnamed doctor if a pregnant woman could swallow a camera so that a doctor could view her fetus via telemedicine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_UjvBiQ6uo
*Todd Akin and Rep. James Lankford proposed a personhood bill that would give constitutional rights to “persons” at the moment of conception. http://okdemocrats.org/rep-todd-akin-and-rep-james-lankford-co-sponsored-personhood-bill-in-congress/
*Paul Ryan also co sponsored a similar bill, “Sanctity of Human Life Act” which would give constitutional rights to human zygotes at the moment of conception.https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/how-bad-is-the-ryan-akin-anti-abortion-bill/2012/08/20/c7e37e04-eafe-11e1-9ddc-340d5efb1e9c_blog.html
HUMAN RIGHTS/ANTIDISCRIMINATION LAWS
*Rep. Todd Akin said, in regard to impregnation after rape, “It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoG0Grs4EEo
* Louie Gohmert fretted about the slippery slope of non-discriminatory laws for the LGBTQ community and how we should outlaw gay space colonists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCWJINpJx88
WEAPONS AND SAFETY
*Rep. Jake Highfill sponsored a bill to allow toddlers to own and use guns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL-pXvKCd5U
*The presumptive Republication Nominee for President, Donald Drumpf, advocates for Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia to have nuclear weapons. He stated, “…wouldn’t you rather have Japan have nuclear weapons…It’s going to happen anyway.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEsBoRVlWXU
We must demand that those who represent the People in a government capacity, whether on the local or national level, possess the knowledge to conduct the People’s business. If they are going to offer opinions on a matter, they should be fully informed on that issue. For example, officials ignorant of matters in science do not belong on the Science, Space and Technology Committee, and those ignorant of human anatomy should not serve on committees affecting the quality of people's health care. If some of our most basic government positions require applicants to pass an exam, such as our postal workers who deliver our mail, shouldn’t our candidates for government be held to the same or higher standards? Please sign our petition and safeguard our country from becoming an idiocracy.
