Empower Student Voices, Stop the Laptop Campus Decision
Why this petition matters
We are Students for Accountability and Action. We're students, just like you who know how easy it is to get frustrated with this school. We've slept in the moldy dorms, we've eaten the cold and sometimes undercooked food, we've felt unsafe walking this campus at night, we've felt marginalized and silenced in our classes, and we know just how easy it is to get lonely on this campus.
We know that it's easy it is to say that Winthrop sucks and that there's no fixing it. We know your frustration, we've seen your hurt, and we know what it's like to have both of those ignored by those who say that they are there to help.
But that's when we realized that when we fight for these things alone, our voice is too small. We can't expect the Board of Trustees and the administration to solve all of our problems either. But if we come together as a community, we can not be denied.
About 2% of the Student Body (75-100 students) represented 4500-5000 students when making the decision. We're being asked to shoulder the burden for the institution and they won't even fully finish the Wi-Fi upgrades until after December. We'll go through an entire semester with everyone on the new laptop campus on the same, awful, regularly failing Wi-Fi.
If you want Winthrop to be the school it promised to be, to be the school you deserve it to be, and to be the school you could feel proud to say you are from, sign the petition. We're asking for the Board of Trustees to stop the implementation of the Laptop Campus decision for one semester or one year so that we can study how it will affect our low-income students and call for a vote from the student body about the decision. We can't do this alone, and you shouldn't be alone fighting for what concerns you most. If we don't speak out and stand up for ourselves and each other, then who will? If you are affiliated with Winthrop (faculty, staff, student, parent, alumni), please note that when signing. Thank you for all of your support!
