Why this petition matters

Started by Stephen Webb

If the coronavirus has done one thing, it has shown how ill-equipped, ill-prepared and undervalued our NHS has become. Our frontline of this fight has nothing like the capability it deserves or needs and we are now all leaning on it in our hour of need. We need to change this together.

The NHS is one of the nation's proudest achievements. At some point, everyone will use the NHS, yet it is wildly underfunded. The government is ultimately responsible for making these cuts, but as a nation, there is a solution that could save it. I would like to propose a simple, voluntary 'opt in' option for people to donate a small percentage of their monthly wage packets that will go directly to the NHS. As an individual, we can feel largely impotent to help, but as a collective we can make a powerful and well-needed change.

It could be that the money goes directly to your own county's NHS services so you can see a more visible impact of your own money, or it could go into a nationwide pot. Either way, if the system that was created was simple enough and widespread enough to opt into, I am confident that there would be a huge number of people who would be happy to offer, say, 1% of their pre-tax wages if they knew that money was going purely to the NHS.

Let's get this system set up.
