Emotional Support dogs should be considered service animals too! We feel that Emotional Support dogs should be seen as service animals because the ideas of animals helping their human is in both concepts. Service Animals have to go through training to help their human but emotional support dogs need no training. While emotional support animals are used as part of some medical treatment plans, they are not considered service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Emotional support animals are simply the providing support for those in need, just like service animals yet still not considered service animals by the (ADA).

If you suffer from anxiety, depression, panic attack, or other psychological and emotional conditions, the law protects your rights to have an official Emotional Support Animal. Emotional Support dogs are often used in Animal assisted therapy sessions to improve the psychiatic or intellectual disabilities of their owners. Service Dogs help provide their handlers support by performing “specific task”. Your emotional support animal doesn’t need to be professionally trained because they provide support just by being around you. I believe mental illness isn’t being taken serious. Intellectual disabilities that are common are Down Syndrome, Prader-willie syndrome, Development delay, fetal alcoholic spectrum disorder. Emotional support dogs are meant to help in critical moments, special tasks, just as a service animal. Still not considered a service animal.

The future we see is the emotional support animals getting the same rights as service animals. Emotional support animals should be considered service animals for all the jobs they do. They both have special tasks to help their human yet not considered service animals. Intellectual disabilities should be part of American Disabilities Act (ADA).
