Why this petition matters

Started by Emma Lloyd

I have suffered for most of my life with mental health problems, and at 19 was diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder, or EUPD. Currently you cannot be detained for treatment under the mental health act for a personality disorder and this NEEDS to change. I have been detained several times for assessment, and once for treatment due to my bipolar but on several occasions I was freed from hospital because my symptoms fitted my EUPD diagnosis, and I went on to severely harm myself. I was discharged from a unit on 5th august 2021 at 2pm and at 1:30am on the 6th august 2021, less than 12 hours after my psychiatrist discharged me, I drove my car into a wall at 90mph with the intent of ending my life. I survived but was severely injured and spent months in hospital recovering and learning how to walk again as I had an extremely unstable fracture at both the front and back of my neck, which required life saving surgery. If personality disorders were taken as seriously as they should be I may never have ended up in that position. It’s time for the law to change and people to recognise that sometimes we need to be detained to keep us safe. Please sign my petition and share far and wide so I can take this matter further, with your support we can and will make changes to the mental health system in Northern Ireland!!!
