Although the Council has abandoned its plans to close the Playhouse, it remains a considerable risk. The user groups that can only save the Playhouse can create a business case and set themselves up as a charity. They then need to take over the management and running of the Theatre. Carry out repairs and implement necessary improvements for disabled access etc. Unfortunately, for many years the building was neglected. They must also become financially self-sufficient.
The group only has months to pull this all together, or else the Playhouse will still be closed and likely turned into flats. We are now fighting Elmbridge Council to give the user group a minimum of 2-3 years of support to enable them to achieve this. The whole community wants to see The Playhouse protected for future generations.
