Kelly Monaghan started this petition to Elizabethtown school board

Due to Covid, Elizabethtown has had to cancel, alter or compromise almost every community tradition. The Elizabethtown Fair is a cornerstone of our community.

Last year, we weren’t able to hold a Fair at all. This year, many families were looking forward to renewing their family tradition of going to the Fair every night and participating by showing animals, staffing booths or entering competitions.

The action by the school board to push up the first day of school to coincide with the start of the Fair means fewer families can attend, will affect child care decisions, and likely reduce attendance and therefore revenue from the Fair. We ask that the first day of school be changed back to after the Fair.

Details:

When: Elizabethtown Area school board meeting, Feb. 23.

What happened: The board decided to move the first day of the next school year ahead by one week to Aug. 23, the same day as the start of the Elizabethtown Fair. And the last day will be on May 26, before Memorial Day weekend. The board voted 7-1 in favor of the new start date, with board member Michelle Pelna opposing the change. Board member Craig Hummer was absent. Instead of full days, students will attend for half-days that entire first week.

We ask that the school board act immediately to reverse the Feb. 23 decisions and change the school calendar to have the first day of school be at least the week after the Fair.
