There are millions of people incarcerated in the United States, more than that of any other country in the world. The US has more than twice as many imprisoned than any other country in the world, aside from China who of which we still have 1.5x more incarcerated people. Some of the imprisoned within our country have been there since childhood, and many of the imprisoned are in prison for over a decade. The world around us is constantly changing as is society, and we citizens can barely keep up while living in it. These prisoners are detached from society and take on change at a very slow rate due to lack of communication and interaction with regular society. They fall behind and it can often be too difficult for them to get back up on their feet once they have served their respected sentences. 'Prisons' are officially known as "Correctional Facilities". They are meant to give those who have committed crimes a chance to change their lives and become upstanding citizens. Unfortunately, much of society has lost sight of that goal, thinking of correctional facilities more as jailhouses, places to throw away the people we don't want to deal with. This thinking has cost hundreds of thousands of former inmates to return to a life of crime and/or have their entire lives taken away, not being able to support themselves. Many who can't help themselves back up become homeless or end up re-incarcerated. This results in inmates loss of moral, depression, anxiety, and damaging illnesses due to lack of will. It also causes overpopulation within correctional facilities, which leads to worse conditions for the individual prisoner, a more harsh setting within the facilities, and the decrease in rehabilitation availability.

Through the years however, major strides have been made in rehabilitation programs. New techniques and courses are used to care for inmates and help them to really change. These include psychiatric sessions and exercises, behavioral management classes, and schooling. There are also programs where prisoners can get a job within the establishment in order to prepare themselves for being thrown back into the world. With today's technology, it's getting easier than ever before to change inmates and help them readjust to life outside. With virtual reality headsets, the inmates are able to practice social interactions, odd jobs, or simply just so much as doing laundry at a launder-o-mat.

So many great things could be done for the inmates in the US. With a little thoughtfulness and some funding, we can take a runt of the litter of our civilization, someone who has lost their way and gotten arrested, and not only get them out sooner, but get them out safer as well. Help keep the incarcerated from going back to jail.
