Hi West Orange residents,

One of the great benefits of a West Orange education is the variety of classes that are offered throughout the district.  From Mythology, Personal Finance and Journalism, our schools offer fantastic classes.  Starting in 3rd grade, a few students are invited to take HAP (or a Gifted and Talented) class.  HAP classes are currently offered through 7th grade. There is a proposed plan right now that would end HAP after 5th grade and have all the HAP kids take honors classes (starting in 6th grade.) HAP would be offered as an elective at Edison which the kids could take instead of a language.  This is a terrible idea, we are asking that the Board of Ed to leave HAP as it is.  Why would you want to take away an advanced class that so many students love? Here are some quotes from current and former HAP students (HAP currently ends after 7th grade) about how and why HAP was such a fantastic class for them.

Current 8th grader- HAP challenged me in a way honors classes did not.   HAP was by far the defining feature of my 6th grade year. I learned things I never would have in Honors ELA. I learned about philosophy, and psychology, which were and are some of my main interests.

Current 8th grader-My HAP teachers made us analyze!  They pushed us to our limits and we learned how to pace ourselves along the way. HAP is a subject worth keeping because the curriculum is so intriguing and exciting.  The work really makes students think and wonder about possibilities and answers to tricky questions and all the while the students are enjoying themselves and making memories.

Current 8th grader - "HAP is the best. I keep telling my younger brother to make sure that he works really hard to stay in HAP because it is so awesome. In sixth grade we started learning about different philosophies and how to analyze books and characters we were reading. It was definitely the best class."

5th grader in HAP- "HAP is my favorite thing about school. I love to work with my friends and use new strategies and solve puzzles. We don't get to do that in other classes. My brother keeps telling me that it is the best thing about going to Edison. I hope they keep the HAP class like he had.

5th grader in HAP-My non HAP classes are very structured. I really like that HAP is not as structured and makes me think more creatively. The teachers welcome the students ideas which they then often use in the class.

5th grader in HAP-HAP stimulates my brain. I am bored a lot in my regular classes. I have loved some of the things we’ve done like inventions and The Amazing Race. Hap is my favorite part of school. I have been looking forward to Hap in middle school forever

Please sign our petition asking the WO Board of Ed to keep HAP as a full year class at Edison, Liberty and Roosevelt!
