Pictured: Invenergy LLC's newly constructed gas-fired power plant in Jessup, PA. Constructed this year, the power plant has already violated its air quality permit.

The Elizabeth Township Board of Commissioners scheduled a Public Hearing on December 20th at 5pm at Elizabeth Forward Middle School in order to vote on a dangerous proposal - and we need your help!

They're considering a proposal by Invenergy LLC that would rezone approximately 147 acres of rural residential property to M-1 light industrial, as well as an ordinance that would make power plants a permitted use in Industrial Zones. That means that Invenergy could build their proposed 20-acre gas-fired power plant without a public process near the neighborhood of Smithdale, the Youghiogheny River, and the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail.

If approved, this proposal would set a precedent for others to create more industrial zones in the township and allow for the construction of power plants in any of those new or existing zones without any public process.

Read more about the proposal and the potential impacts here.

Together, we need to protect our community by saying NO to Invenergy's Ordinance and Rezoning Proposal! By signing this petition, you are calling on the Elizabeth Twp Commissioners to VOTE NO on 1) rezoning from rural-residential to M-1 light industrial and 2) allowing Natural Gas Electric Power Generating Systems as a permitted use in all industrial zones.
