“...every community in Massachusetts has been impacted by [the opioid epidemic].”

-Massachusetts Department of Public Health (https://chapter55.digital.mass.gov/

Current Situation

Approximately 8.7 million children in the US have at least one parent with a substance use disorder. Yet, the effects of adult opioid use on children is often overlooked. Children whose parents misuse opioids are at a significantly higher risk of school failure, addiction, obesity, heart attacks, and emotional and psychological challenges. However, resources specific to children affected by familial opioid use are scarce and hard to access. We see this problem on a local scale in Boston Public Schools, where officials have failed to hire desperately needed mental health professionals.

“Tomorrow’s too late to make sure that kids get the services they need.”

-Annissa Essaibi-George, Boston City Councilor and Education Committee Chairwoman, speaking to the Boston Herald in September 2019.

 Proposal

State-funded, easily accessible, trauma-focused counseling needs to be provided in every public school. Each school should be provided with at least one counselor per site who is trained in trauma-informed care that takes parental substance use into account, and provided with a private office to work with students. To help reduce the long-term impact of parent opioid misuse, it is essential schools have mental health professionals READILY AVAILABLE to support children in crisis.

Call to Action

It’s time for lawmakers and educators to come together and support the children who have been impacted by the opioid crisis. In May the Boston Teachers Union voted to allocate funding to hire 23 mental health professionals. To date, NOT ONE of these professionals have been hired. Contact Elizabeth Sullivan, Executive Director of the Boston School Committee, at esullivan3@bostonpublicschools.org to demand the hiring of mental health school counselors. With your support we can ensure that children receive the trauma-informed mental health services they deserve.
