Hour Long Lunches
Hour Long Lunches
Our Junior lit and comp class DEMANDS a change. This change involves having longer lunches that are 60 minutes. By extending the lunches the students will be able to have time to enjoy their food, tardies will be reduced as well as food in classrooms, students that leave campus for lunch will have more time, this will also allow the teachers to have a break and even more preparation time.
We can make this happen by taking out cardinal time and starting school fifteen minutes early. Most schools start at 7:30 AM anyway so this change wouldn't be an extensive change for Elizabeth. This is an effective method because the socialization that happens during cardinal time can be put into a longer lunch. Also we won’t have to extend the school hours which will get in the way of sports and extracurricular activities. This will benefit the parents who need to get to work early in the morning, and will change the students mindsets to want to go to school because we will have a longer time to enjoy time with our friends and to eat.
A research done by Youki Terada about how students need long breaks proves our point when it says “Long breaks increase their productivity and provide them with opportunities to develop creativity and social skills.” If we get these breaks our minds will be more open and ready to learn. Class time productivity will go up because our minds will be clear and there won’t be food to distract others. Students won’t miss valuable learning time because there will be less distractions. This also benefits the janitors because they won’t have to clean up more food in the classrooms because students will have enough time to eat their lunch.
We have created many ideas to prove this point and show civil disobedience by having a walk-out for an hour lunch to prove what it would be like if there was a change. An assembly would introduce this idea to the students to get them involved in our idea. Posters will be made and even teachers will get involved because this benefits them as much as us. We will create a petition and get the student body involved.
We ask you to make these changes because it benefits the physical and mental health of the students and staff of our school. If nothing is done about this we will act for ourselves to help our school improve like we have already mentioned. Thank you for listening to our ideas that will help benefit our learning.
