Eliminate the Bedroom Tax for Households with Disability Needs

Eliminate the Bedroom Tax for Households with Disability Needs
The Issue
I am a parent with a child who has sensory processing disorder and ASD. Their health condition requires an extra room in our home to serve as a sensory room – a space that offers a safe, comfortable environment to help them process the world around them. This room has been integral to my child's welfare and development in ways that extend beyond measure.
Previously, housing benefit was covering the cost of this extra room due to its essential value for my child's care. However, with the introduction of the Universal Credit system, we are faced with the "bedroom tax"- a regulation that has brought unexpected financial strain to households like mine, as well as other parents who have special needs children, who have extra rooms for legitimate reasons. This tax implies that we either need to compensate for this room or face relocation - which would not only be disruptive but could inflict significant distress on my child.
According to the National Housing Federation, about 2/3rd of households affected by the bedroom tax include a person with a disability. It's concerning to see how this policy undermines the well-being of the most vulnerable and leads to financial distress.
We believe this is a serious oversight in the policy that needs urgent correction. Everyone deserves a home that meets their special needs without the associated financial burden.
The elimination of the bedroom tax for households accommodating disability needs is a crucial step towards a more inclusive society that values and upholds the living needs of every individual. We call on the government to review this policy and consider the unique needs of households living with disability requirements. Sign this petition to stand with us in urging for this much-needed change.
