Straws are such a big portion of plastic waste throughout the world. In fact, in the year of 2017, Americans used about 390 million plastic straws each day. During our research process we have discovered how harmful plastic straws are to marine wildlife. “Over 1 million seabirds die each year from ingesting plastic” (Hugh). The fact that plastic straws are not recyclable means they take 200 years to degrade. The more straws that continue to be thrown away, the bigger that threat becomes to the environment.
We come offering many solutions to how you can help solve this issue. Completely eliminating straws from your restaurant is not the only choice you have. There is an option to use biodegradable straws or even reusable, metal ones as substitutes. Even the act of simply asking diners the question if they would like a straw or not before giving them one, can cause a difference. In addition, when refilling a diners drink you can ask them if they would like to reuse their straw. Even though in the short term it may seem like a hefty cost to replace plastic straws, in the long run it ends up being a cost effective solution and an environmentally friendly one as well.
It would be preferable if you could provide us with a brief summary of your current straw policy. We hope that you will be willing to work with us to change the plastic straw policy that you currently hold in your restaurant. Any change is worthwhile.
