Bluefield State College is charging out of pocket expenses to their students receiving financial aid. The Academic Support fee is an out of pocket fee for any student taking over 15 credit hours, charging $296 PER CREDIT HOUR, making the average cost of 1 extra 3 credit hour class $888 (and this is the in state lesser fee). This means students in low income situations have to pay almost $900 of their own money, even if the receive aid, to the school before they receive their financial aid. Some classes are only available during specific times, making it harder for students to get the credits they need. This negatively impacts our local community as it holds students back from graduating, extending their stay at the college, increasing the institutions profits.
