The current policy to access antiviral treatments for Covid-19 in the UK is severely restricted to primarily people with weakened immune systems for whom the vaccine may be less effective. The policy assumes that everyone else can receive a vaccine for their protection, but that it not always the case. Some people cannot receive a vaccine on medical grounds but were originally advised to shield as clinically extremely vulnerable These people have no protection against Covid-19 but are still at the same high risk. The policy needs to be changed to include anyone who was identified as clinically extremely vulnerable who cannot have a vaccine. If this change occurs it will provide reassurance that potentially life saving treatment is accessible if Covid-19 is contracted, thereby providing an option to end shielding with some protection in place.This would have an immeasurable impact on some vulnerable people and their families, who have no protection against Covid-19 under this eligibility criteria for antivirals and enable them to cautiously rejoin society.
