Requesting Community Consultation regarding Harold Rossiter Reserve

While our Town and Council have been discussing the expansion and possible relocation of our local hockey club for over a decade, most residents and ratepayers only learned of a proposal to develop an exclusive use hockey facility on the grounds of Harold Rossiter Reserve on the eve of its presentation to the 13 June 2017 Council meeting. The Business Case for the facility includes one synthetic and up to three grass turf playing fields, lighting towers and purpose built training facilities and club rooms. The proposed facility would directly adjoin our fragile Kensington (Bush Forever and endangered ecological community) Bushland.
Most residents are unaware of the proposal because the Business Case states that the ToVP preferred to delay community consultation because it’s premature & because of community outrage. The proposal is expected to impact terrestrial fauna in the following ways: • Loss of habitat (Particularly Black Cockatoo species) • Noise disturbance • Light pollution • Loss of food sources • Loss of recreation area • Increase road traffic, increasing the risk of road kills to native fauna • Litter increase [P160 of 06 June 2017 Elected Members Briefing Session Appendices – available from the ToVP website].
While we support our local clubs, we are no less concerned by the increasing pressures to develop our dwindling public open and green spaces, particularly those which currently provide passive recreation, universally accessible for use and enjoyment by ALL of our ToVP and surrounding community.
We are asking residents to sign our petition requesting community consultation. ToVP councillors will receive a clear message that community consultation regarding the proposed development is required, before any further work on the proposal is undertaken.
