It is common knowledge in Nigeria that politicians lack alternative business addresses, they depend on power, political patronage and contracts to survive and remain relevant. This has made election rigging a must do. Election rigging has become endemic, thereby making the conduct of a free and fair election an abnormal event.

Election rigging is carried in many ways such as vote buying, ballot box snatching, intimidation and manipulation of voters during election day by hired thugs.

Election rigging subverts the will of the people, denies the electorate the right to participate in a democratic process and ends up producing bad leaders who do not have the interest of the people at heart.

Political leaders are saddled with the responsibility of making decisions that determines the destiny of a nation, therefore it becomes very important that good leaders are elected into offices and this is only guaranteed by a free and fair election.

All the woes that have befallen Nigeria which includes terrorism, institutional corruption, dwindling economy, high inflation and lack of basic infrastructure are all direct consequences of bad leadership. This has made life difficult and unbearable for Nigerians. little wonder, suicide, crime and kidnapping are on the increase. seventy percent of the population are living below poverty line which is living on less than one dollar a day according to the United Nations. Hunger and starvation is now the order of the day, Nigeria is now a dangerous place to live.

University students have spent more than four months at home due to the industrial action of ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities). The government has blatantly refused to meet the demands of ASUU but rather has spent billions on naira to purchase exotic vehicles for the government of a neighbouring country and that same money could be used to settle the demands of ASUU. This is a direct consequence of bad and inept leadership.

Suffice to say that Nigeria's problem can only be solved by good leadership and good leadership can only be gotten from the conduct of a free and fair election.

Election rigging can only be stopped by ensuring election criminals are punished.
