The coming tolls threaten to divide and devastate our regional economy like never before; we must work together, in a bi-partisan manner to stop the tolls.

Letter to
Elected Officials
The coming tolls threaten to divide and devastate our regional economy like never before -- commuters will be paying nearly $1,000 in tolls every year, small businesses may have to end service to neighboring cities and each city in the region will be financially and geographically isolated. On all accounts, these tolls will burden and depress Hampton Roads' economic unity and growth.

Moreover, under VDOT's contract with Elizabeth River Crossing, the tolls at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels will be operated in a for-profit manner by an international company. We, the signers of this petition, are unequivocally opposed to granting a billion-dollar monopoly to an international corporation to profit off the very tolls that will devastate our local economy.

We are calling on you -- our elected officials -- to oppose the coming tolls to Hampton Roads. If given a choice between tolling and raising the gas tax, we unanimously would choose raising the gas tax as at least it is an equitable, straight-forward tax; not a tolling deal with an international corporation purposefully masked in opportunistic secrecy.

It is our intention to make the 2013 General Assembly elections a referendum on these tolls and we call on you, our representatives, to respect the will of the people.
