Attn: Legislators: We Demand Better Laws Against Animal Cruelty

We want Community Cats and Companion Animals to have the RIGHT to be considered victims!

Almost daily we hear of animal abuse, neglect, torture, etc. We would like our government officials to address this matter in a more encompassing manner. An Oregon Judge ruled that "Animals Can Legally Be Considered Victims, Just Like Humans" and we would like to see this reflected nationwide.

Many of our community cats, also known as free roaming, stray and feral cats have been abandoned by their owners through no fault of their own. The very people who should have been their guardians for life put them out, leave them behind, or drop them off at some distant location, but there is no punishment at all for this!

In one instance, the RI SPCA had to euthanize a dog, "Moses" on September 1, 2015. The dog had been thought to have been abandoned for a long period of time. He was not. He had been starved to the point of critical condition due to severe malnutrition and the 'guardian' had dropped Moses off in a parking lot that very day. The owner was found and had simply stopped feeding this animal. Charge the owner faced? Misdemeanor!

Currently each State sets their own criteria for 'felony animal cruelty'. We are requesting better guidelines for meeting these requirements, with abandonment, starvation, throwing, kicking, or binding any animal for the purpose of torture, being just a few of those many issues that should be addressed.

Although we are the "Community Cat Movement" this petition would make it clear to our governmental officials that we want more protection for ALL of our animals, especially our companion animals. Please help us help them by joining in signing and sharing this petition.
