Reform Elbert County Animal Control

In 2017 65% of animals that entered the Elbert County Animal Control facility were killed. It is all but impossible to make contact with anyone at this location. If an animal is found, there is rarely any help for the public. Local law enforcement states that they do not have access to the shelter. The few current animal cruelty & neglect laws that are in place are not being enforced. Animals are being dumped in other counties due to desperation from those who find them & have nowhere to take them. Volunteers are rarely, if ever, allowed in & are considered a liability. Per an open records request, 26% of animals went to rescue, but officers “couldn’t disclose any rescues”. We are requesting that ECAC reform their policies by: opening the doors, having transparency, publicly listing animals for adoption/owners to find & most importantly, ANSWERING WHEN CITIZENS IN NEED CALL! With only 421 intakes last year there is no excuse for these numbers and issues.
