The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica is meant to be a safe place, where sloths are cared for and given the opportunity to live out their lives in peace. Sadly, we have learned that not only is this not the case, but worse, we believe that the sloths at this so-called sanctuary are being neglected to death.
Two veterinarians, who have worked at the sanctuary, have come forward with their concerns that the Sloth Sanctuary is abusing the sloths. The veterinarians, Dr. Camila Dunner and her husband, Dr. Gabriel Pastor, have said many of the sloths became ill or injured due to poor housing, inappropriate diet, and a lack of veterinary attention.
According to the veterinarians, the sanctuary keep the sloths on display in public in healthy housing, but in the back, out of the public’s eye, they have as many as 200 sloths in tiny cages, where the animals can barely move. Although the sloths are solitary animals, they are kept in pairs in cages, which consequently leads to constant fighting, with sloths biting and hurting each other through the fence. The sanctuary also reportedly gives the sloths a diet of chopped vegetables instead of leaves they would eat in the wild, which has led to choking incidents with the animals. And rather than release healthy sloths back into the wild, the sanctuary keeps them. The sanctuary must commit to returning healthy and rehabilitated sloths to their natural habitat whenever possible, and maintain the highest standards of care for those animals that cannot be released. We don’t believe this is a safe-haven for these sloths and we need your help to save them.
Demand that the Costa Rican government take action to investigate these allegations of abuse and neglect at the Sloth “Sanctuary.” These precious sloths need your help now!
