I lost my brother Jake on the afternoon of Saturday May 10th 2014, to a senseless boating accident at Folsom Lake, California. He and three others were speeding along in a “go fast” boat, capable of reaching speeds of over 100 miles an hour, and something caused the boat to crash and eject it’s passengers. The force with which they hit the water was powerful enough that not one of them made it to the surface. No one was wearing safety gear, including life jackets, so I was told.
Those are the statistics of the event, but if that was all you knew about my brother, you might be inclined to dismiss it as just another tragic boating accident that caused a loss of life. To me, the loss of life meant that I had just lost one of the most important people in my life. A brother who’s love, sage counsel and personal involvement were everything to me and my children.
But my brother and the three other men who died that day left behind families who are deeply affected by the loss. These men were husbands, brothers, fathers, sons and uncles. They left scores of friends who morn their loss as well.
Because the location of the accident was in El Dorado County, families were informed that the EL Dorado County Sheriff himself was the only person who could make the call about asking for sufficient resources to mount a robust search. We discovered that of the four days they searched, only one day included more teams than the original El Dorado County and Placer County Dive teams.
Now we've been informed that the search has been called off and will only include an ariel search once or twice a day by the California Highway Patrol helicopter. This is a travesty because there are not only four families, but many, many people who are unable to move on until the bodies have been found. There are children who are really having a difficult time with this. Please help us find our family members!
