Michelle Hernandez Delgado started this petition to El Camino College Administration

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives and consequently, has made an impact on higher education. As a community of students and parents, we will like to acknowledge and applaud the resourcefulness and creativity of our educators and administration during these extenuating circumstances. Thank you all for making the transition to online classes as smooth as possible and for allowing our education to progress.

However, we would like to present a case for allowing alternate forms of grading at El Camino College, especially the option of giving students the choice to choose either a letter grade or pass/no pass in their classes. Students must be given this choice until the end of the semester in any courses, electives, majors, or certifications. Other institutions of higher education, such as Georgetown, MIT, UW, and USC, have adopted this grading pivot because of the disruption caused by COVID-19.

We, as a community, do not share uniform experiences during these difficult times and therefore, must not be graded uniformly. This pandemic magnifies preexisting difficulties and blindsides us with many more. For instance, many of our students have been suddenly laid off from their jobs and the distress of their sudden financial instability will invariably affect their learning. Students in essential jobs are in the frontlines of the pandemic and fear for their lives. Additionally, student parents are confronted with new demands as their children are suddenly home because of school shutdowns. These are a few examples of the many ways we are being affected daily. We are not equally affected by this pandemic, and we should be given a choice as to how we are graded. Other institutions of higher learning have loosened their requirements and therefore, is not a reason to delay this decision any further.
