On October 2nd, 2020 at 11:43 am, during a protest an officer was caught on video pushing a teenage boy aged 16, off of a bridge into the Mapocho River leaving him with severe injuries and completely unresponsive.

While crowds gathered around the commotion, multiple witnesses saw and stated that the police did nothing, instead continuing to blast water cannons at the civilians. It was the efforts of volunteer medics and civilians that ultimately pulled him out of the river. Since then Chileans have called for the resignation of president Sebastian Piñera with protests continuing since October.

“According to Chile’s public prosecutor, the Carabineros have been responsible for 8,575 alleged human rights violations while policing the protests, but only 16 officers have been stood down as a result of their actions.” (VICE worldwide news)

“Michelle Bachelet, a former president of Chile, delivered damning reports detailing numerous violations that have occurred during the protests, including alleged torture and sexual abuse.” (The Guardian)
