Save The Great Eastern

The Great Eastern will cease to exist in its current form from March, when pub company ei publican partnerships (formerly Enterprise Inns) plans to take the property back from current operators Pleisure who have run the pub for more than 20 years.

Worse still, this is part of ei's plan to take back Pleisure's other pubs in Brighton, namely The St James Tavern and The Office.

In the 27+ years since Pleisure has been running the pubs, they have become known as local gems which have both reflected Brighton's diverse culture and added to it - each pub creating its own bespoke spirits offer alongside a top-notch range of real ales.

Customers know the Great Eastern for its American whiskeys; The Office for its gins and the St James for its rums. Pleisure and the individual pubs have won awards for these spirits offers. The staff have unrivalled drinks knowledge and provide a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere for customers. The pubs have become important music venues, too, with the Great Eastern contributing to the wider cultural scene with an annual summer street party and festival.

Brighton simply cannot lose these pubs. We are asking that the lease on the Great Eastern be extended and a commitment made to working with Pleisure so that the leases on the St James and The Office can also be renewed when they fall due. It cannot be in the interest of the community to destroy an award-winning company, nor can it be in the interest of ei to be seen to be doing so.

The campaign to save the Great Eastern has begun - please sign this petition and join the voices calling for pub to stay open in its current form.
