Stand in Solidarity with Sara Hegazy

On September 2017, Sara Hegazy raised the rainbow flag at a Mashrou' Leila concert in Cairo, Egypt. The band has an openly gay lead singer but her public support of the LGBTQ+ community received horrific backlash in the media.

As a result, an unprecedented crackdown took place by the Egyptian authorities against the LGBTQ community. Sara Hegazy was one of people arrested during the mass arrests. During her detainment, Sara was sexually assaulted and tortured.

Sara sought asylum in Canada after she was released on bail, where she had been living since 2018.

On June 14, 2020, she committed suicide, leaving a note with the following final words: "To my siblings, I have tried to find salvation and I failed; forgive me. To my friends, the journey was cruel and I am too weak to resist; forgive me. To the world, you were horrifically cruel; but I forgive."

A large portion of the Egyptian/Middle Eastern public is spewing hateful and homophobic comments on social media about her character, sexuality and death.

We are trying to rise above their hatred and bigotry. To show that we support her. To show that she did not die in vain.

This world did not deserve her.

We stand with Sara Hegazy.

Rest In Power.
