Why this petition matters

Started by Jessica Foley, MD

This petition states that we would like universal masking at the EGR public schools to prevent widespread infections among the school age populations.

As you know, COVID cases have continued to surge with the new omicron variant. Since the mask mandate ended in the East Grand Rapids Public Schools on January 2, cases have significantly increased. Currently not having a mask mandate goes against the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Surrounding school districts (Forest Hills Public Schools and Grand Rapids Public Schools) have implemented a mask mandate.

Pediatric ICU hospitalization and pediatric admissions in Grand Rapids have reached their highest peak since the pandemic began.  While masking will not prevent every infection with COVID, it will certainly reduce the spread and potential hospitalization.

Furthermore, the school system is already burdened with multiple staff and students being out and in quarantine.  This has meant shuffling of resources to provide virtual options and increased burden upon our teachers.   Quarantine is also affecting parents, who have to miss work due to needing to stay home during the quarantine period. By not having a mask requirement, the children and adults in our schools are being placed at risk every day, and then by extension, the entire community is bearing the brunt of this decision.

We urge the East Grand Rapids Public Schools to implement a mask mandate to protect our children, the teachers and staff, and slow the spread of COVID-19 in our schools and our community.
