Letter to express our support for FAC recommendation

Dear Board of Trustees,

We are residents of the Estates Community and currently our kids are assigned to Laurelwood Elementary school.  We are writing to express our support for Facilities Advisory Committee’s recommendation of repurposing Laurelwood Elementary school as long as we are assigned a school with close proximity like Tom Matsumoto, Evergreen Elementary or Silver Oak.  While nobody wants to see a school closed, we agree with the following factors that have led the district to evaluate this option: -

Declining Student enrollment: It’s clear from the demographer’s report that the enrollment decline is due to aging population of residents in Evergreen district. This is just the fact that we, the residents of Evergreen district, have to accept. Rising house prices is the biggest obstacle for inflow of younger families. This is beyond anybody’s control.

Revenue Decline: The fixed cost associated with the schools is only going to increase in coming years while the revenue for the school district is going to go down due to enrollment decline. It doesn’t make any sense to keep higher number of schools for shrinking student population.

Focusing on Quality vs. Quantity: I am sure every parent and the district would agree that our schools should focus on providing quality education to our students. Funds from repurposing these schools should be used in enhancing the academic programs and making quality of education better.

Location concern of Laurelwood: Due to the closure of street from Yerba Buena towards Laurelwood, there is only one way in and out of Laurelwood today. With crime incidents on the rise, a school should have multiple exits for emergency.

Lastly, we believe that the biggest concern of the residents who are opposing the closure of the school is the fact that a commercial establishment in place of the closed school/(s) will create a nuisance in the community. We hope that the district will duly consider this concern and repurpose the school in a way that’s in the best interest of the community and its people.
