More on Discrimination Against Autistic Mothers (Guardian Article)
Dec 29, 2016 — https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/dec/26/autism-hidden-pool-of-undiagnosed-mothers-with-condition-emerging
“Some of us working in this field are becoming increasingly aware and increasingly concerned about the numbers of autistic women whose attempts to get help for their children ... are greeted with hostility, combativeness ...”
“The assumption is that being autistic for a mother instantly raises concerns as to the welfare of the child,” she said. “But there is no evidence to support that idea. They express the ability to demonstrate empathy, affection, responsibility, love for their children as you would expect any other mother to do. To me, this is a human rights issue.”
"New research written by Baron-Cohen, Alexa Pohl of the Autism Research Centre and Monique Blakemore of Autism Women Matter has found that one in five mothers of an autistic child, regardless of whether the mother had a diagnosis herself, has been assessed by social services."
You will have seen the previous petition update on the law firm blog about child protection being misused against autism families by LAs ("Law Firm Tells it Like It Is Over Malicious Social Services Referrals - The Game is Up" https://www.change.org/p/edward-timpson-mp-make-brighton-hove-city-council-cease-unlawful-section-47-ss-investigations/u/18784967) and this is yet more evidence.
Why is there no public outcry over this? Why are they being allowed to get away with it? It's a national scandal.
The BBC are doing a documentary on among other things, the abuse of autistic children in schools by school staff. They are considering other issues that SEN families are suffering. Please all consider emailing this person at the BBC who is collating information for the documentary to ensure they include this particular issue:
Alys Harte: firstname.lastname@example.org
Call: 07912 583640
Alys says the documentary is in early production and they are open to hearing about other issues they should be looking at.
So if she receives a few emails, they are likely to be more inclined to include this particular one. Please share this far and wide.
Many thanks for your help.
