Help us residents improve the horrendous parking situation on SW Birch St.

I have lived in Newport Beach most of my life.  I love this city; it has helped make me who I am.  As a food delivery driver, I see much of the city, how it is designed and held together.  I have noticed how Newport Beach handles parking area for it's residents.  For areas that are not touristy, parking is plenty with no interference.

Except one area- SW Birch St., south of Bristol.  I live in the Santa Barbara Apartments (SBA), with my girlfriend and another roommate.  We get only one covered parking spot for our apartment.  There are around 20 total open parking spots, which are essentially fought over on a daily basis.  The commercial buildings around us are stubborn, not willing to listen, understand, or budge a little with allowing SBA residents to park (at least over night, from 6pm to 10am).  Management, in the past, has tried talking to the property management/owners to allow SBA residents to park over night.  If one walks around these commercial properties, one will notice that a vast majority of the time, there are quite a few open spots for parking.  Residents and guests have been towed from these properties in the past.

Things will get worse for us in the not-so-distant future when the SBA will have a gate installed.  Yes, the gate will give us added comfort and security, but it will also eliminate three parking uncovered spots, making the turmoil of finding a spot that much more difficult.

Talking with another resident who has been living at the SBA for over a decade, I learned that the street area in front of the SBA was once an open parking area for residents and guests.  When the bike lane was brought in, the parking area was removed.  If I am lucky, I will see a cyclist use it once a month- even in the spring and summer months.

I see two solutions for this dilemma:

  1. Remove the bicycle lane altogether.
  2. Set aside an area for SBA residents to park in one of the partially vacant lots to the north, south, or west of us.

To have the parking work so as those lots are not swarmed with the vehicles that are not associated with the SBA, parking passes or stickers can be issued.  I have, in the past, spoken with other residents about this.  The permit idea would be fine, even if there was a fee of X amount (that is reasonable) that is issued to the management of said property if it were to cooperate.

We are open to any other suggestions that will help, and not hinder the issue at hand.  All I know is that something needs to be done soon.  We do not know what options we have left.

I am addressing the City of Newport Beach, Mayor Edward D. Selich, and City Councilman, Duffy Duffield, of District 3 (the District the SBA reside in).  I ask that please, help us solve this issue.  I not only love living in Newport Beach, but love my neighborhood.  The roar of the planes over head, the Back Bay, and my neighbors have become a part of me as much I have become a part of them.
