No acceptance into Cockrell School of Engineering until sophomore year

Admission to the Cockrell School of Engineering is highly competitive. Several students get to be accepted before the freshmen year, while a lot of other students get rejected. For those students who got rejected, if they want to get into an engineering major at UT, they have to overcome extremely high and difficult standards such as an almost excellent GPA in order to make an internal transfer. However, those who already got accepted by their freshmen year could slack off instead of trying as hard for good grades like the students who got rejected. From a personal opinion, someone from my high school recently got accepted into Mechanical Engineering by his freshman year, and while he is currently a salutatorian in his class, he is not hardworking, lacks good math and science skills, did not make higher than a 3 on the AP Calculus and Physics exams or over a 1350 on the SAT, and is not greatly involved in organizations or social groups. Choosing whom to get accepted as freshmen solely based on their high school academic performance is not fair because many high school students take easy AP or dual credit classes where they do not have to actually learn or work hard in order to be ranked higher than others with a higher GPA. Even though they have a high GPA, they cannot pass their AP exams because they did not understand the subject enough. On the contrary, many students who get rejected actually challenge themselves to learn by taking harder AP classes and get way better AP scores despite having lower ranks. As a student who also got rejected, I made 5's on the AP Calculus and Physics exams and also got a 750/800 on the SAT Math section. I believe that in order to create a fairer competition, the Cockrell School of Engineering should not accept students by their first year but instead choose the best academic performers after their freshmen year for the most qualified and hardworking students to be accepted.
