- Statement on creating spaces which Black excellence and challenge racial injustices in math teaching and learning- Black Male Mathematics Educators
As Black men in mathematics we voice our outrage at the senseless killings of unarmed George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and other Black men and women at the hands of police agencies and armed civilians in the last several years.
As Black men in mathematics, we call on police agencies and civilians to reject policies and practices leading to potential lethal outcomes. We call on the termination and investigation of police personnel that aid in the unwarranted violence towards Black men and women.
As Black men in mathematics, we call on all mathematics educators to join with us in acknowledging the pain caused by these events, and to join us in reaffirming our commitment to prioritizing mathematics which embraces Black excellence as a humanized platform for anti-racist teaching and learning, trauma-informed practice, culturally relevant and social justice mathematics.
As Black men in mathematics, we call on each of us to acknowledge and recognize our role and responsibility in educating all children, especially Black children. We must commit to ending practices that position our children in a deficit view and using deterministic labels that too often position our children as "inferior."
We call on the mathematics community to immediately create local spaces which embrace Black excellence and challenge racial injustices in mathematics teaching and learning.
