When we stop believing in a future where race does not matter, we stop aspiring to be fully human. Teaching that White Americans and American society are inherently racist is wrong. This is being taught under the cover of “racial awareness”.

The National Society for the Advancement of Black Americans advocates for Black advancement and equality, yet we cannot agree with the racial awareness trend being embraced by Virginia public schools. There is no evidence that this approach will improve Black achievement and only offers White and Black America a false narrative about Black achievement. This narrative will eventually hurt all people of color and threatens to slow real Black student progress by dividing our parents, teachers and students in a race debate. If this approach continues to be embraced by the country at large it could destroy Black student progress by taking energy and attention away from real solutions.

These are the facts based on data obtained from the Virginia Department of Education:

1. In 40% of Virginia’s school districts, Black students graduate at a higher rate than White students.

2. There are only 8 school districts where the Black/White graduation gap is in the double-digits. In half of these districts, Black students graduate at a higher rate.

3. In the 5 largest school districts, Black students are only 2.7% behind White students. In Loudoun County, for example, the Black graduation rate is 97.2% while the White graduation rate is 99.2% in 2019 (pre-covid) data.

4. In severally underperforming schools districts, Whites graduate at about the same or lower rate.

5. In 94 out of 118 districts with Black students, Black students have a graduation rate of over 90%.

The data is clear. Racial awareness training and racial politics have no place in Virginia public schools. Sign this petition to bring sanity back to Virginia public schools. Ask the governor and local boards of education to get race out of public education. The color blind approach is already working.
