Katie Austin started this petition to Education Secretary

It’s a current issue in the press and across the country, that a huge number of families are still living in poverty. During Term Time,  parents on certain benefits can claim free school meals for them, but the 5-6 week summer holiday becomes a real struggle.

With children at home they have to take time off or pay for childcare if they aren’t fortunate enough to have friends and family for support. Bill are harder to pay and food becomes an easy target for budgeting. But children need a well balanced diet, and the parents need to take care of themselves in order to provide for all their children’s needs. Nobody in the family should be going without.

I would love to see schools being used as food banks for their own children over the summer period. Families whose children attend the school and can spare from their weekly shop, can provide a range of foods that are suitable for fellow children and parents of those in need. If they require support, it can be done quietly and respectfully in familiar surroundings, as the school will already know their individual circumstances.

Staffing for this can be minimum, as schools are generally open over the summer anyway. As a teacher myself, I am sure that staff would volunteer a day or two of their time to ensure this is covered week by week.

Please sign this petition so that it is brought to the attention of the Education Secretary. I think we can all do more.
