We need the government's help to educate parents and the youth more about FGM and the health issues that comes along side with it. In order to achieve this, we need to add this to the Religious Studies curriculum. Also, we need to have more PSHE lessons for primary students so they know how to identify when they are in danger.

Females who experience FGM often experience long-term health consequences including scarring, cysts, abcesses and other tissue damage and infertility. They may experience difficulty and pain when they menstruate, urinate or have sexual intercourse.

FGM is practised several countries around the world like Chad, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Cameroon etc. However, it doesn't mean that minorities in UK don't practise. In the summer, which is also known as 'cutting season', kids get sent home to have this ritual done to them. There are different types of FGM, but the most common ones are:

  • Type 1 (clitoridectomy) – removing part or all of the clitoris.
  • Type 2 (excision) – removing part or all of the clitoris and cutting the inner and/or outer labia.
  • Type 3 (infibulation) – narrowing the vaginal opening.
  • Type 4 – other harmful procedures to the female genitals including pricking, piercing, cutting, scraping or burning.

In order to stop FGM, we need to take action and add FGM to the sex education curriculum so that kids know when they are in danger or have been affected.
